Hackery Update

Blazer

So we know the translation is going well (chapter 20 is done! I'm so excited!) and the graphics are on my to-do list (I still don't have a competent and committed graphics editor though) but what about the hacking parts? Is they all done?

It's not: a while ago I said I fixed an issue which made text glitch up, the details of which no one cares, but it turns out the fix didn't work on flashcarts, which is a big problem--so after several hours of hacking I fixed that too, and I wouldn't say that without proof:

That leaves a problem with the text rewind where the text gets cut-off, but Nagato, our go-to man for the most difficult problems, is unable to help us anymore. However, we really appreciate everything he's done as a volunteer helper and wish him the best in the rest of his endeavors!

As for the problem, what will we do? We're not sure as I haven't been able to solve it myself but we'll do our best to figure out something.

Until next time!

EDIT: Special shout-out to Pandorakun who has been killing it as a proofreader. Practically a one-man (or one-woman--dammit, I never asked gender on the localization application) localization team here. :D

    1. there were no rumors, and i doubt it'll be ready that fast ._. (though it'd be nice since we did start this July 15th...)

  3. Wait, when it will be done, we will be able to actually play it on a 3ds? Without fear of getting bricked or something?

Best freaking way to start the day right there.

    1. I've heard the 3DS has a flashcart use counter that might eventually be used to restrict internet access or whatever, so I don't think we can guarantee that.

    2. dammit Blogger stop deleting my replies... /rage

tl;dr I happen to use my 3DS for my DS flashcart, and it works as shown, before FE12 didn't work on flashcarts, only on emulators but I fixed it (the point of this post). note that I no longer update my 3DS for fear of Nintendo preventing flashcart usage via a patch or something.

  4. ...I feel embarrassed to even look at this update so :V
I've just had an excessive amount of free time lately.

From what I know about the cart Blazer uses, it pretends to be a legit game. The chances of you getting bricked are pretty low because of that. The only thing is that you need to be careful when updating your 3ds firmware due to compatibility issues and security updates.

  5. I plan to use the original DS anyway, as I tend not to trade in my old consoles in case of future need/want, so I think I'm all good. This does mean that eventually I will drown in Nintendo, but I think I'm okay with that.

  6. I'm pretty sure playing this on a 3DS won't brick anything, I use a DSTwo on mine and have never had a problem emulating DS games (among others).

Anyway YAY updates! Part of me wonders if maybe you posted what the graphics editing would entail, that you'd get some volunteers. I know I'm partially interested in helping out, but I just don't even know what I'd be doing... and I'm betting there are a lot of people who feel the same about wanting to help out.

    1. That's a good point, and maybe I'll try it. Admittedly it's usually not very fun and is mostly font work since the graphic editing is ultimately to translate the text, not to change the graphics themselves. But, it's also an important part and is the difference between an average translation and a good one--the graphics may be harder to edit and harder to hack but they're worth their weight when it comes to actually playing the game.

  7. ...Actually, does anyone know where I can get a flash cart from in the UK?

    1. Unfortunately, I'd think your best bet is eBay (ugh). There aren't many physical retailers of flashcarts anywhere, and most of the people who sell them are the same people who chip consoles (SO five years ago) and repair your iPhone screens for $20. In short, who knows.

That being said, Pandorakun has been tearing my .txts apart. I put one in and ten minutes later she was working on it. Crazy. Good work, P-kun.

    2. I can always play it on an emulator. It's just...portability and all...*sniff*

    3. Shouldn't the respective flash cart 'labels' have homepages to buy it from? At least the M3 had a homepage when it was still up to date. Don't know about buying stuff from there tough and M3 is outdated afaik.
I still use it, since I only use my cart for fan translations and homebrew, but the newest games don't work on it, I've heard.

    4. yes but I'd like to respectfully ask that we limit talk of flashcarts here: please keep that to GBAtemp.net or something. While I don't mind a little as it relates to FE12 (that's kinda the point of this post lol) flashcarts can be considered a touchy subject legally and it's also nice to not get things super off-topic in general~

its just a question, but after the story translation been completed, are u guys planning to update the download section?
its not have to be perfect, but maybe another rough translation patch to follow the progress section?
kinda exited looking at your videos & screenshoots
(after all, i've been following u guys since the start)
well, keep up the good works guys.

    1. They have no intention of releasing another patch until the 100% completion. Sorry, but you'll have to keep waiting. I know it kills you. It kills us all. But I'd rather wait less time for the final version than play beta versions.

  10. I hate to post something so trivial. I would love to start playing FE12 - but I cannot actually drag my working FE12 file into the v2.0.1 file. Does it matter that I'm using a mac?? Please help! Thank you so much!!

    1. yes, using a Mac almost always matters

ATM there's no way to patch for Macs, I'll try to remember to fix something up for the final patch. sorry bro

      Delete
    2. P.S. ATM it's out of my control, I don't make the patching programs -___-, I'm not even sure how I'll make a Mac-compatible patch but I'll at least try long enough to piss me off

    3. I found a thing. I have no idea if this works though, since I don't have a mac myself, but no harm in trying it out.

    4. I used the app Multipatch on my mac, it worked out fine. I had to rename the patch to FE12TRANS.xdelta though. (Instead of FE12TRANS.pat.)

  11. Thank you for clearing that up. I use my mac for almost everything but I have access to a PC too. Easy enough to move files, perform patch and move back to the laptop. Look forward to the full translation! Keep fighting the good fight!

  12. What an amazing site to stumble upon! It is quite exciting that someone is taking on this project (much respect!). I have played a few FEs entirely in Japanese - having to slowly learn each command and menu while barely getting the jist of the story. Such a great series. Why, oh why don't we have this release in the US? Will it be the same for FE 13? In the meantime, may the caffeine gods bestow you with the haste of a thousand assassins!

    1. FE13 was confirmed for a European release at least, so a translation won't be necessary for Americans even if it isn't released over there. That is, unless you're overly picky about spelling doughnut without an 'ugh' in it :P

      Delete
    2. you're forgetting that it requires us to have a European system

which means about a couple hundred bucks including shipping and everything but the game itself -_______-

That being said I will take extreme measures if FE13 doesn't come to the U.S. naturally...

    3. Is it ironic that I bought a US 3DS because in anticipation that we PAL players would suffer like we always do, only to find that Awakening has a PAL release and not a US release? I hate my life.

    6. I was really talking about some theoretical point in the future when someone figures out how to hack and patch a 3DS game, though.

And tough luck, Agromono. Haste makes waste. (I only just discovered that saying.)

      Poor Agro.

  13. This site is great! I can't wait to try out the hack for myself!

    But I have 2 questions:
    1. How are you translating? Are you using a translator, or an actual person?
    2. What don't you have done yet? If I play it now, what exactly will I be missing out on?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 1) actual people (plural)
      2) the current patch is just a demo that only includes basic menus and stuff: you won't be able to play the actual translated game until it's 100% complete. there is no release date for that though, so you'll just have to wait unless you want to miss out on almost everything XP

    2. Everyone knows that that the patch will be released the day after the apocalypse. Duh.

  14. Omg as soon as I saw the "chapter 20 is done!" I got uber happy because that means this is going really fast since you just posted that you finished chapter 18, what, within 5 days before this blog was posted? I'm glad I got into this so early; I've been saved from an incredibly long wait that would have been if I had been here since the beginning.

On another topic that has little to do with anything... How...? What...? How have you gotten the hack onto your DS? Did you hack it while it's IN the DS? The screenshot in your blog entry confuses me.
